There are currently no restrictions on parking for members.

Opening times

Commonwealth House is open to members on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10.30am to 3.30pm throughout the year except for public holidays and closed periods at Christmas (Friday 16th December to Thursday 5th January) and Easter (25th March to 13th April 2016).

Please note that we welcome enquiries for private hire during Christmas and Easter closures.

FRIDAY LUNCHES

Friday lunches are held on the first and third Friday of each month.  Enjoy nibbles and a drink at the bar followed by a choice of two main courses. Afterwards relax with a pot of fair trade tea or coffee.  Next Friday lunches Friday 20th October and 3rd November.

THE COMMONWEALTH WRITERS READING GROUP

This popular group meets once a month to discuss works by authors from around the Commonwealth. The Group will next meet on Thursday 26th October.  Please ask Gina for details if you would like to join them.

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS  TO DECEMBER 2017

FRIDAY 13th OCTOBER – 12.15pm for 12.45pm – TALK BY DAVID LEWIS, EDITOR OF THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW

On 15th January this year the BBC broadcast a special edition of the Antiques Roadshow.  The programme marked Holocaust Memorial Day.  Survivors and members of their families gathered at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London where they met Fiona Bruce and a team of experts.  Each one brought with them artefacts from that time and told their unique story to the nation.  As a mark of respect no value was, or indeed could be, attributed to any of their possessions.

David will talk about the programme’s inception, its contributors and its making through to its editing here in Bristol.  This should prove to be an extremely interesting talk and early booking is recommended.

FRIDAY 10th NOVEMBER – 12.15pm FOR 12.45pm – TALK BY LAURENCE TRACKMAN ENTITLED “COCOA AND THE CARIBBEAN – UNWRAPPING CHOCOLATE”

Bristol based Laurence is a highly entertaining and much sought after speaker who lectures all over the world on the history of chocolate and its production. We are delighted he has agreed to talk to the Society and he promises this will be a real treat for chocolate lovers!

Cocoa is grown in some forty countries, each with its own unique cocoa story.  The Caribbean is a relatively small source of cocoa and Laurence will compare its impact on two Caribbean islands.  Join us for a fascinating and enjoyable introduction to the wonderful world of chocolate.

SATURDAY 25th NOVEMBER – 6.00pm – CLUB FILM NIGHT

The Man in the White Suit staring Alec Guinness.  An Altruistic Chemist invents a fabric which resists wear and staining as a boon to humanity.  However, big business see his invention as a threat to profits and set about surpressing it at all costs.

Take a front row seat for the private screening of this classic film.  The curtain rises after a buffet supper.
