Members and guests were delighted to welcome our Patron, Peaches Golding, on 29th September. Peaches stressed the importance of the Commonwealth in modern society and spoke of her vision for the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.

THE COMMONWEALTH WRITERS READING GROUP
This popular group meets once a month to discuss works by authors from all over the Commonwealth. The Group will next meet on Thursday 26th October.

FRIDAY 13TH OCTOBER – 12.15pm for 12.45pm – TALK BY DAVID LEWIS, EDITOR OF THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW
On 15th January this year the BCC broadcast a special edition of the Antiques Roadshow. The programme marked Holocaust Memorial Day. Survivors and members of their families gathered at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London where they met Fiona Bruce and a team of experts. Each one brought with them artefacts from that time and told their unique story to the nation. As a mark of respect no value was, or indeed could be, attributed to their possessions.
David will talk about the programme’s inception, its contributors and its making through to its editing here in Bristol.
FRIDAY 10TH NOVEMBER – 12.15pm for 12.45pm – TALK BY LAURENCE TRACKMAN ENTITLED “COCOA AND THE CARIBBEAN – UNWRAPPING CHOCOLATE”
Bristol based Laurence is a highly entertaining speaker who lectures all over the world on the history of chocolate and its production. He promises his talk will be a real treat for chocolate lovers!
Cocoa is grown in some forty countries, each with its own unique cocoa story. The Caribbean is a relatively small source of cocoa and Laurence will compare its impact on two Caribbean islands. Joins us for an enjoyable introduction to the wonderful world of chocolate.
SATURDAY 25TH NOVEMBER – 6.00PM – CLUB FILM NIGHT
The Man in the White Suit, staring Alec Guinness. An altruistic chemist invents a fabric and doesn’t wear out or stain. Big business soon see this as a threat to profits and are determined to surpress it at all costs.
Take a front row seat for the screening of a classic film. The curtain rises after a buffet supper.
